This is a True
Story:

One drizzly morning I was walking
our 1 year old siberian husky and our 10 year old schnauzer up in
the woods behind our house. Now just so you understand, our
property backed up to an area known as Peppercorn Hill and Upton
State Forest which is frequented by mountain bikers, joggers, dog
walkers, hikers, etc... After living in Hopkinton,
Massachusetts for about 2 years and kickin' around in these
parts, never did I come across such a thing as I did that one
morning. Out of nowhere I heard a voice, "Hey lady!" Well low
and behold what do I see before me but a man decked out in
camouflage. Now when I
say camo, I mean camo. This guy was not fooling around.
I swear to this day if I had asked to see his underwear, I'm sure it
would have been camouflage. He also had in his possession, a
bow and arrow of sorts. Now I am not a hunter; I have nothing
against it, I just don't participate. So basically, I am naive
about such things. He said, "I almost shot your dog, that
red and white husky looks like a fox." My heart dropped and I
quickly looked around to see if she was OK. "You know its
hunting season, right?" I quickly replied, "uh, nope."
"Well, if I didn't see that huge Gator golf umbrella you were
holding, I probably would have shot her. You need to start
wearing orange and putting something on your dogs like a bell or a
vest or something like that." He must have seen the odd face I
was making and replied, "I'm not kidding you lady, its for your own
safety."
As a fashion designer with about
15 years of industry experience, the wheels in my head started
turning. I could think of nothing else for the next few days.
When I talked to my husband later in the day; I told him I was going
to take a day off and sew up some fleece pullovers for the two
of us and some neckbands for the dogs. I immediately
went online to the Malden Mills Retail Store and
bought 5 yards of Blaze Orange Fleece.
That was 5 years ago..........
Since then my husband and
I have become part of the dogsledding community and we have
acquired two more huskies.

We spend
our weekends in the spring and summer training
the dogs, and we race them in the fall and winter. We are
outside all year long; either walking or training the
dogs, running, hiking or just enjoying the great
outdoors. Every year we wear our orange pullovers and every
year we get more and more interest from folks doing the same stuff
we do. More and more state parks and state forests are asking
the public to wear at least 200 square inches of blaze orange as a
precaution.
The bright orange fleece fabric
provides high visibility and comfort when the days start
getting shorter and the weather starts getting cooler. I
started making dog pullovers for my schnauzer as she was getting
older and it became harder for her to stay warm. I also
started attaching a PetBlinker TM to her coat since she isn't as fast as she
used to be and it helped me find her in the dark.
We offer
PetBlinkers TM
as an "add on" to our pullovers and other
products. They are great for additional
visibility at night. Malden
Mills Polartec® in Blaze Orange is wonderful especially if
you walk or hike in areas that are close to hunting
zones. Polartec® is a very practical
outdoor fabric that is easy to care for.
